Teacher Spotlight of the Month: Mr. Wood

By Tamera Escamilla

Mr. Wood is part of the science department at Cedar High School.

As I interviewed Mr. Wood I asked “Why did you become a teacher?”

Mr. Wood started mentoring kids when he was in the hospital. The kids were part of the foster system, like he had been. He realized he wanted to help kids, so he started looking for job options. One of his first options was a therapist.

Mr. Wood wanted to stay in the army, but he then got injured. After that, he went to get a bachelor’s in biology and chemistry. When Mr. Wood started teaching, he wanted the kids he taught to feel loved. Mr. Wood loves the kids and he loves trying to learn the ins and outs of how the kids work. So he can learn how to help them.

While he isn’t a big fan of faculty meetings and all the extra things about being a teacher, Mr. Wood just wants to work with the kids and build bonds with them. Mr. Wood is an awesome teacher that many students admire as
a role model.

However, when asked if he had favorite students Mr. Wood states, “Depends on the class period and year” But, honestly, Mr. Wood doesn’t have just one. He loves all his students, especially ones that he can build a bond with. He loves
watching all of his students learn and grow.
